The Challenge
Blackleg is becoming an increasing problem for canola producers in western Canada. It can be a challenge for growers to choose a cultivar with the correct disease resistance, as there are many races of blackleg that have different profiles. To be able to choose the proper cultivar, growers need to know the specific race of blackleg that is in their fields.
The Project
Monitor race dynamics of blackleg for effective use and rotation of proper resistance genes for sustainable management of blackleg of canola in western Canada.
The Results
The avirulence profile of L. maculans population remained relatively stable during 2017 to 2021; only AvrLep1 increased noticeably in each of the prairie provinces. KASP markers were developed and adopted which improved the efficiency, scope, and accuracy of Avr analysis.
Grower Benefits
Better understanding of the pathogen race structure in blackleg is essential for disease management. This will guide the development and recommendation of resistant canola varieties, giving growers better disease control.
