The Challenge
The ketogenic diet is very popular for weight loss and are gaining interest as a treatment for diabetes, as they may reduce the requirement for drugs to control blood sugar. However, keto diets are often high in saturated fats, which can increase cholesterol and other cardiovascular health risk factors. Substituting saturated fats with canola oil may improve these incomes.
The Project
Compare glucose response, cholesterol, and inflammation in people who are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes after following the keto diet for 6 months. One keto group will receive a supply of canola oil, the other group will receive a supply of saturated fats, and the control group will consume a low-fat diet focused on whole grains.
The Results
This section will be updated upon completion of the project.
Grower Benefits
Results of this study could promote canola oil in ketogenic diets, as canola is a healthy and affordable oil. This could create more demand for canola oil, leading to more demand for Canadian canola.
