The Challenge
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is classified as an early stage of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the number one cause of mortality in North America. Although canola oil is considered healthy, there is a lack of scientifically sound clinical studies comparing canola oil to other fats in the diet.
The Project
Analyze the effects of canola oil (low in saturated fatty acids) on blood lipids, blood vessel function and MetS parameters on individuals with mild hypercholesterolemia and MetS versus an oil mixture with high saturated fatty acids.
The Results
Canola oil consumption was effective for reducing both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in participants with MetS characteristics. It also reduced advanced glycation (sugar) end-products in individuals with a smaller waist circumference.
Grower Benefits
Increase value to canola oil due to the rising health benefits – but must continue to be researched to gain consumer trust and market value.
