Preparing to Straight-Cut, then Swathing Too!

The decision to swath or straight-cut is one you will ultimately have to make on your own. It may depend on a multitude of factors: the number of people available to help, the plant stand, how many acres you have to harvest etc. etc. But, what if you gave it a shot? Would you commit to it entirely, or swath too? What if you decided to straight-cut again next year? How could you improve a crop’s likelihood of becoming a straight-cut-candidate?

In this episode of Canola School, Chris Holzapfel, research manager at Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation advises growers who hope to straight-cut to make sure they use an adequate seeding rate (with an easy trick to determine what that rate is), plan to control disease and consider varieties with reduced shattering potential.  As for committing to one method, Holzapfel prefers an integrated approach…
