With seeding underway, it’s easy to switch the drill from cereals to canola and just continue rolling.
However, Angela Brackenreed of the Canola Council of Canada has a reminder in this wet and windy Canola School episode: a clean, weed-free start to the growing season is more important than an early start.
The tank mix options for pre-seed weed control in canola are limited, but to minimize glyphosate resistance pressure, she suggests adding chemistries other than glyphosate when possible. The products approved for use ahead of canola (as explained here) are:
- glyphosate
- bromoxynil in a tank mix with glyphosate
- Aim (carfentrazone) in a tank mix with glyphosate
- CleanStart (carfentrazone and glyphosate)
- Conquer (bromoxynil and carfentrazone) in a tank mix with glyphosate
Freezing overnight temperatures should also be taken into account with early season weed control.
