Key Highlights

This month, we welcomed Adrienne Herron, new General Manager of the Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers, into the TAC family. We also welcomed the new Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Tara Sawyer, into her new role.

Engagement

  • Amanda met with Melody Skiba-Garner (Intensive Livestock Working Group) to discuss pertinent files that both organizations are working on. These meetings allow for collaboration and knowledge sharing across livestock, crop and apiculture sectors.
  • On May 27, TAC met with John Conrad for an update from Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. These regular updates allow the opportunity for TAC to have direct conversations with government staff, provide feedback from our producers, and stay up-to-date on Agriculture and Irrigation activities.
  • The Agriculture Plastics Recycling Group (APRG) met at Olds College on May 28. Amanda and Bijon Brown (Alberta Canola) attended on behalf of TAC. Participation in the APRG allows TAC to share information with our producers, as well as provide feedback from our producers about agricultural plastic recycling programming.

Looking Ahead

June is shaping up to be a busy month! Below are some upcoming events and files to keep on the radar.

  • We have been invited to participate in the National Agricultural Soil Health Strategy virtual sessions on June 10 and 11. We hope to learn more about the development process of this future federal policy, as well as provide feedback from the perspective of Alberta producers.
  • TAC will be having our annual in-person meeting at the Alberta Grains office in mid-June. Our in-person meetings allow for team building, strategic planning, and an opportunity to catch up prior to the summer event season.
  • The last week of June will be full of various field days & outdoor engagement opportunities. Alberta Grains will be hosting their Plot2Field day on June 23, and Alberta Beekeepers Commission will be attending the 70th Annual Beekeepers’ Field Day on June 26. Field days allow producers, staff, and the public to learn about emerging innovations and network with stakeholders.

Team Alberta Crops is a collaboration between seven of Alberta’s producer groups: Alberta Beekeepers Commission, Alberta Canola, Alberta Grains, Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers, Alberta Sugar Beet Growers and the Potato Growers of Alberta. We work together to advance grassroots policy and advocate on behalf of Alberta’s crop and beekeeping sectors.
