Recent federal trade actions, including tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum, have resulted in the loss of market access to China for Canadian canola. Given the significance of China as a key export destination, Alberta Canola sought direct input from growers on the impacts of this disruption and the federal government’s role in addressing the resulting losses.

At four recent Alberta Canola grower engagement meetings, producers were asked:

The results reflect the concern growers are feeling following the sudden and significant loss of an important export market due to policy decisions outside the agricultural sector. China has historically been a major destination for Canadian canola, and the disruption has contributed to price pressure, delivery uncertainty, and increased financial risk on farms.

While growers recognize broader trade and geopolitical considerations, the poll highlights a strong expectation that when farmers bear the economic consequences of government trade actions, appropriate support and compensation should follow. Alberta Canola will continue to bring forward growers’ perspectives and advocate for timely solutions that stabilize markets, support farm viability, and ensure producers are not left carrying disproportionate risk from trade disputes beyond their control.
