Alberta Canola Welcomes Progress on China Canola Tariffs
Back to: News & Updates
Edmonton, AB – Alberta Canola welcomes today’s announcement that China will significantly reduce tariffs on Canadian canola seed and remove tariffs on canola meal entirely through at least the end of 2026.
Thanks to the work of the federal and provincial governments, and leadership from Prime Minister Carney and Premier Moe, China is expected to lower tariffs on canola seed to about 15 percent by March 1, 2026, down from roughly 85 percent. And the 100% tariffs on canola meal will be removed through the end of the year.
“This is positive news heading into seeding,” said Andre Harpe, Chair of Alberta Canola. “Reducing the tariffs on seed and eliminating them on meal will get trade flowing again.” Predictable, rules-based trade is essential for farmer confidence and long-term investment in our industry.
Alberta Canola looks forward to continued collaboration with governments and industry to ensure these tariff changes translate into sustained market access. Alberta Canola will share updates as more information becomes available.
